Stay Connected

Do we really know what our kids are watching on television these days? There are lots of television shows that are approved for children and are both child and parent friendly. But do we take the time to actually watch them? Spending time with your family watching a T.V. show or a made for television movie can be a great way to bond with them and start up good conversations, but are all the shows appropriate?

In this day and age, the media seems to be taking over our lives; it’s everywhere you look. You constantly have the radio, televisions, newspapers, magazines, mp3 players, cell phones and other types of media in your face 24/7, it’s no wonder why our children don’t spend more time away from these devices; they have everything right at their finger tips. By having these forms of media and information easily accessible, there isn’t any need for kids (and some adults too) to go out and get exercise, or have conversations with others. Seems like today, everyone is either text messaging someone on their phone or sending e-mails; the joy of talking with people face to face or directly has been decreasing over the years. By watching family oriented television shows, you will be able to spend more family time together, as well as open up conversation between the children and parents.

Having honest and open conversation is an important aspect to have in any type of relationship whether it is with your significant other, friends or immediate family. By having dialects, you will be able to share your feelings with one another as well as build a stronger bond between you. When watching the shows with your children, you can share a common interest. You are able to connect on their level and talk about things that they like, and understand the world that they live in.

Another positive to watching television and made for T.V. movies is that you get to monitor what your children watch and don’t watch. Sex in the media is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society, even for children’s television. By being close by them, you are able to see what they are exposed to, and what will be good for them in the long run. It’s important for kids to learn that sometimes what they see on T.V. and commercials isn’t always reality, and what the majority of the population looks or acts like.

Great channels to watch with your children are ABC Family as well as Disney shows. Keep in touch with your children and stay involved with their life. Times may be changing, and forms of communication and outlets for media may be growing, but get down to the basics and communicate with them. By being able to bond with them and having conversations about a common interest, will not only help better your relationship with your child, but also help you monitor what they are watching and letting into their world.

Back to school, already?

The idea of going back to school isn’t as far fetched as we would like to think. It’s only the beginning of August, and back to school supplies and clothes have already hit the shelves. Excitement, sadness and feeling overwhelmed are just some of the emotions that come rushing back when the idea of starting school comes to mind. But don’t be fooled, these feelings affect you as parents, as well as the kids. School shopping for the right folders and notebooks because your child has to have the right color folder or the newest types of pens and pencils, and not to mention finding that perfect first day of school outfit.

If your child is leaving the nest for the first time the experience can be a bitter sweet. It may be the first time your child has been away from home or their first time riding the bus alone, but having the feelings of anxiety or sadness are normal and expected. But the start of school can be an exciting time for everyone, children new to school as well as experienced school-goers, and also for the parents. Its great having your kid’s home for the summer to enjoy family time and vacations, but when September rolls around, the relief of school can be much needed.

School is not only an educational experience, but great for building social skills and creative minds. Finding new friends is a great way to introduce your children to the different lifestyles and backgrounds, as well as gaining greater social skills. By meeting such a variety of people, this will hopefully spark their interest and creativeness in their everyday life.

So, as we find the school year quickly approaching, keep your cool and look for the positives. You’re child will be able to build better social skills and socialize with kids their own age. They will hopefully be able to become more creative in the projects and educational experiences they go through. And last but not least, you will get some piece and quite in the household, once again.

Talk is cheap, and so is summer fun!

With the beginning of August already here, you start to think, “Where did July go?” Or more so, “Where did summer go?” We tend to be so wrapped up in work, family, our children’s events and finding time for ourselves in the mix of it all that time flies by us. But there is still plenty of time left in August to get in fun, cheap activities you haven’t done yet this summer while still enjoying the sun and warm weather.

It’s so important for everyone to stay healthy by not only eating the right foods, but also by getting the proper amount of exercise. By bringing the family to the playground, taking the kids for walks, or even getting out for an evening walk alone, you can start on your road to a healthier you! By bringing the kids to a local playground, they can release some energy they have built up inside them and get the exercise they need, all while having a great time playing with other kids or entertaining themselves.

One attraction that comes around once a year that everyone looks forward to is the state and county fairs. These can be great exercise due to all the walking and relatively inexpensive if you spend your money wisely. The state and county fairs usually cover a large amount of land, with plenty of different and interesting attractions to view. You can get in great exercise, while having a blast. One thing to pay attention too, is that even though you are getting in a great deal of walking, it’s important to watch what you are eating there. Fairs don’t always tend to have the healthiest food available, or the cheapest either, but by being aware of what you are putting in your body, you can eat healthy, get great exercise, and enjoy relatively inexpensive fun with the whole family!

Summer always seems to be a great time for family, barbecues and sprinklers. Barbecues on a warm, sunny, summer day can be the perfect way to begin or end your weekend. They are a great way to get family and friends together for a good, fun time. You can even bring the kids and set up the sprinklers so they can run around with other kids and enjoy the good food, good company and the great day!

Although it is important to get outside and get fresh air and exercise, it’s more important to be aware of the risks that come with summer fun. Enjoying the sun is something everyone loves to do in the summer, who wouldn’t enjoy the warm weather and sun warming them up after the long cold months of winter and raining months of spring? But it’s important to remember one important thing, sunscreen! Sunscreen not only protects your skin from the inconveniences of sunburns but also ultraviolet rays (UV Rays), and can prevent your skin from future sun damage and skin cancer.

Yes, August is almost here, but there is still a lot left in summer to enjoy; barbecues, state fairs, parks, playgrounds, sprinklers and the sun! So get out there and get some exercise, eat healthy while doing your activities, and have some fun! But also, protect your skin now and in the future and remember the sunscreen!
